Make Art in Any Language

“I enrolled my daughter in the Spanish ceramics class to help her maintain her Spanish language proficiency. We got so much more than we anticipated. She loved the class and looked forward to going every day. At the end of the week she said "It was so fun, I'd go back next year even if we make the same stuff." She is returning this year as will others from her school.”

All clay camps are taught by Grant Boulanger, experienced immersion educator and potter. Clay camps for summer 2012 are hosted by Concordia University in St. Paul, MN and held in Concordia’s Clay Shop in the lower level of the Lutheran Memorial Center at 350 Hamline Ave. North in St. Paul.

Clay camps include a lively wheel throwing demonstration by Keith Williams, Professor of Ceramic Arts at Concordia. Campers may also receive an introduction to Concordia College by an Admissions representative.

Keith Williams, Professor of Ceramic Arts, demonstrates throwing a huge cylindrical form for a clay camp. Keith gets to know students by name, offers occasional tips on technique.

DETAILS:

Drop off:

Boulanger Pottery Camps will be held in the lower level of the Lutheran Memorial Center in Concordia University’s Clay Shop, located at 350 Hamline Avenue North, St. Paul, MN (Map). The Lutheran Memorial Center is the building on the Southeast corner of Hamline Ave. and Concordia Avenue (Campus Map). Grant Boulanger will be standing at the rear entrance of the building on Monday, the first day of camp, to welcome you and your child.

Pick up:

For your child’s safety, please park and enter the Clay Shop. You can wait in the kiln room until your child is dismissed. We will not release children to leave the Clay Shop without a parent or an individual identified on your child’s registration form.

What to wear, what to bring:

Clay Camp is a messy place. Wear clothes that can get dirty. An oversized t-shirt is the best and can stay on site all week. For your safety and protection please do not wear open-toed shoes such as flip flops. Tennis shoes are most appropriate, although sandals that clasp securely and cover the toes are OK.

Snacks:

A short break is scheduled daily. We encourage you to bring a light snack; however, please know that campers will not have access to a refrigerator. A bottle of water is also highly recommended. Please label items with the child’s name.

Camp Schedule:

Throughout the course of the week, students will work with instructor, Grant Boulanger. to create and decorate their pieces. Keith Williams, Professor of Ceramic Art at Concordia, will give a lively demonstration. In addition, campers will also receive a short tour of Concordia’s Campus and may receive a welcome from an Admissions representative. Other demonstrations by area clay artists, including Latino artists, may be arranged. On Fridays students will not work with wet clay, as it will be reserved for glazing the pieces created during the week.

Completed Pottery:

Clay camp participants will be exposed to a range of the processes involved in pottery creation - creating, decorating, and glazing. Mistakes in any of these steps can result in pieces being redirected to the recycling bucket. However, all students will experience success in the process and can expect to finish two to five pieces during the camp. Due to the nature of the process, some pieces may crack or break. Boulanger Pottery cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from these processes, including, but not limited to the firing process.

Completed pottery will be ready for pick up 10 days after the last day of camp. You will receive an email when it is ready to be picked up.
